I spent much of my childhood with my maternal grandfather Mick Shear. The eldest son of a Russian immigrant, to save his father from being interned when war broke out in 1914, aged 17 he joined the Middlesex Regiment and spent the duration of the war on burial duties overseas. He told me about the choosing of the Unknown Warrior and other stories, which fascinated me. He passed away aged 79 in Middlesex.
