Should a coffin inside a hearse be visible or not?

Writer's picture: Sue KraySue Kray

The picture shows a UK hearse above a photo of a US hearse. Both were manufactured in the same year. In fact, the British hearse is our own, photographed before being vinyl wrapped in white. The UK hearse has large windows all around so that coffin is fully visible together with any accompanying floral tributes etc, whilst the US hearse has just tiny windows, and those have curtains (drapes) fitted. The main reason for this is because the US hearse has no under-deck facility unlike its UK counterpart, which means it is unable to transport a coffin (casket) prior to the funeral without it being hidden from view. US manufacturers are now designing hearses so that the coffin is visible. However, these are so expensive that local family run funeral homes cannot afford them.
